Our Work

Nourishing Hawaiʻi, Strengthening Communities

At Hawaiʻi Foodbank Kauaʻi, our mission is to nourish our ʻohana today while we work to end hunger tomorrow. Every day, we work with local partners, volunteers, and supporters to provide nutritious food to families, keiki, kūpuna, and individuals across Oʻahu and Kauaʻi. Our programs are designed to meet the unique needs of our diverse communities, promote food security, and foster hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Disaster Response

Our Commitment
Hawaiʻi Foodbank is a go-to agency for food response and relief when a crisis hits our islands. Recent disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighted the vulnerability of food security in our isolated islands.

Such disasters have also lifted the power of our community to respond, surfacing new possibilities for the Foodbank to deepen its impact by leveraging our networks and relationships in support of a more coordinated and effective response to feeding needs. This is why one of our four pillars named in our 2023-2027 Strategic Plan is to be a proactive leader and supportive partner in disaster preparedness and response, formalizing our historical work in this area.

Farm to Families

Fresh Local Food for Our ʻOhana

The Farm to Families program is one of Hawaiʻi Foodbank’s signature programs. Through Farm to Families, we are able to support our local food systems while, at the same time, providing fresh, healthy, Hawaiʻi-grown food to those in our community facing hunger. Since the program’s inception in 2020, we have invested nearly $12.2 million in more than 40 farms and food hubs and distributed over 9.7 million pounds of local produce and proteins — including culturally important foods such as poi, ‘uala and ‘ulu, to our community.

Food 4 Keiki

Nourishing Keiki Health and Wellbeing
In Hawaiʻi, 1 in 3 keiki may not know where they will get their next meal. For more than 80,000 keiki in Hawaiʻi, getting the energy they need to learn and grow can be a daily challenge. Feeding keiki who are facing hunger is about more than simply giving them food. It’s about providing nourishment, wellness and strength. That’s why Hawaiʻi Foodbank has developed Food 4 Keiki — a group of programs that aims to provide nutritious food to improve our keiki’s health and well-being.

Kūpuna Fresh

Fresh Produce for Our Kūpuna

Kūpuna Fresh operates in conjunction with the Senior Food Box Program in order to provide more fresh fruits and vegetables to seniors in need. Participants receive an 8–9 pound bag of produce each month with items such as eggplant, sweet potatoes, squash, tomatoes, lettuce, bananas and more. Special attention is paid to ensuring the produce is culturally meaningful to the communities we serve, that it can be easily prepared and that the bags are not too heavy.

Kūpuna Programs

Nutrition Support for Our Seniors
Hawaiʻi Foodbank Kauaʻi recognizes that kūpuna face unique challenges in maintaining food security, from fixed incomes to transportation barriers that make accessing nutritious food difficult. Our comprehensive kūpuna programs address these specific needs through multiple pathways to nutrition support. From monthly food boxes filled with essential groceries to fresh produce programs that deliver culturally meaningful fruits and vegetables, we ensure our seniors have consistent access to the nutrition they need to stay healthy and independent. Through partnerships with farmers’ markets and community organizations, we also provide opportunities for kūpuna to access fresh, local foods while maintaining dignity and choice in their food selection. These programs recognize that proper nutrition is essential for preventing health complications and supporting the well-being of our treasured elders throughout our islands.

ʻOhana Produce Plus

Fresh Food Access for All

ʻOhana Produce Plus connects keiki, kūpuna, families, and individuals in need with fresh fruits, vegetables, and essential groceries. For over 20 years, this program has delivered millions of pounds of produce, dry goods, and shelf-stable foods to underserved communities across Hawaiʻi — always free of charge. The program supports low-income families, people with disabilities, those experiencing homelessness, and others who may have limited access to nutritious food. For many, ʻOhana Produce Plus is their main source of fresh produce and healthy options.

In the past year alone, Hawaiʻi Foodbank partnered with 47 agencies on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi to distribute over 2.8 million pounds of fresh produce, along with 3.6 million pounds of baked goods, dairy, eggs, cereal, snacks, beverages, canned foods, and more.

SNAP Assistance

Maximizing Food Benefits for Families
If you’re struggling to afford groceries, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) can help stretch your food budget by providing benefits to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, meats, and other unprepared foods. While SNAP benefits cannot be used for prepared meals, vitamins, or non-food items, they provide crucial monthly support for families facing food insecurity. Hawaiʻi Foodbank offers free SNAP prescreening, application, and recertification assistance to help you navigate the process and access these vital benefits. Our trained staff can help determine your eligibility, complete your application, and assist with renewals to ensure you continue receiving support. Contact us to learn how SNAP benefits can help your family access nutritious food while creating long-term pathways to food security.
Nearly 1 in 3 Hawaiʻi households are struggling with food insecurity.

In 34% of households with children, one or more keiki are food insecure.
